Becoming an Estrela Mountain dog breeder, was not on my dream to-do list. I mean, Dogs? Loveeee! But the words, “Dog Breeder”? That’s just a negative, icky subject. But at some point in my life, I’ve likely uttered the words “I will never…” about many things that I eventually ended up pursuing. And one of those “never” statements was definitely: “I will never become a dog breeder in the United States; it’s a toxic environment, and public scrutiny and criticism do not ‘spark joy’ for me!” But you know what they say about never saying never.

However, I do have some genuine “I will never” statements as a responsible Estrela Mountain Dog breeder that I stand behind. Allow me to share a few of them with you.

5 Things I’ll Never Do as a Responsible Estrela Mountain Dog Breeder and how I honor my dogs history, working function, and focus on preserving the Estrela Mountain Dog Breed.

Being a responsible Estrela Mountain dog breeder encourages me to adhere to certain principles. In this article, I will discuss five things I will never do as a dog breeder.

By following these guidelines, I can contribute positively to the breed and ensure the growth, longevity and preservation of the Estrela Mountain dog breed here in the United States.

If you’re a hopeful Estrela mountain dog owner or future breeder (maybe right now you’re remembering the dreams you had as a kid to own a big, fluffy call of the wild Buck dog and then adulting happened and that dream never saw the light of day), this post is all about you to. I hope to inspire you to pursue your dream of owning an Estrela Mountain Dog.

And if you’re not sure whether or not you’re an aspiring Estrela Mountain Dog Owner, here’s a post I wrote on Estrela Mountain Dog Pros and Cons: Is this Breed Right For You?

#1. I’ll never compromise the Breed’s standard and history for the sake of marketability

I will never compromise breed standards or ethics for profit. Breeding for a specific “look” that is popular, but does not align with the breed’s history should not be an Estrela mountain dog preservation breeder’s goals.

I always prioritize the well-being of the dogs and uphold the established breed standards. Breeding should never be solely driven by financial gain. It is important for me to breed responsibly, considering the health, temperament, and overall quality of the dogs.

This ensures that future generations will maintain the characteristics and integrity of the breed.

#2. I’ll never stop educating myself as an Estrela Mountain Dog Breeder

  • I will never neglect continuing dog breeding education.
  • I firmly believe that education is essential for dog breeders to stay inspired, learn from other breeders, and improve their craft.
  • I stay informed and updated on the latest research, best practices, and advancements in dog breeding. Education is key to becoming a knowledgeable and responsible breeder.

It allows me to make informed decisions and implement appropriate breeding strategies. I keep learning about dog genetics, health issues, breeding techniques, and responsible breeding practices. By staying educated, I can continuously improve my breeding program and contribute positively to the breed.

#3. I’ll never be an Estrela Mountain Dog breeder just for money

This one feels so straight from my heart that I’ll keep it simple. While it is never wrong to be justly compensated for work and dedication, breeding solely for the money can compromise the quality and integrity of your program. You should produce art because you have a passion for it, not just for financial gain.

I will never prioritize quantity over quality. Breeding should always prioritize quality over quantity. Instead of focusing on producing a high volume of puppies, I aim to produce healthy, well-socialized puppies that meet breed standards.

Quality is the guiding factor in my breeding program. This ensures that the puppies I produce will have a positive impact on their future owners and contribute to the betterment of the breed.

#4. I will never neglect the pursuit of overall health for the Estrela Mountain dog breed

I will never neglect health testing and screening. Responsible breeding requires thorough health testing and screening. I conduct the necessary tests specific to the breed I am working with.

This may include genetic tests, hip and elbow evaluations, eye examinations, and other relevant screenings. By ensuring that my breeding dogs are healthy and free from known genetic or health issues, I can minimize the risk of passing on hereditary conditions to future generations.

I will never disregard the well-being of my breeding dogs. The welfare of my breeding dogs is always a top priority. I provide them with proper healthcare, nutrition, socialization, and a loving environment. I maintain a close relationship with my breeding dogs and ensure that they receive adequate exercise and mental stimulation.

When the time comes, I am prepared to retire dogs from breeding and find suitable homes where they can enjoy their retirement years.

#5. I’ll never let criticism of dog breeding stop me

This is a big one for me. The dog community can be bitter and cut-throat, which doesn’t align with my values. However, I’ve realized that the preservation of a breed is worth facing negativity. Despite the public criticism surrounding dog breeding as a whole, we will remain steadfast to our commitment to preserving the Estrela Mountain dog breed.

Just as writing is a subjective art form, dog breeding follows the same principle. I understand that not everyone will agree or appreciate my efforts, but I won’t allow criticism from people who have done nothing to to deter me from doing something.

“If they haven’t done more, Don’t let them Tell you how you should have done it their way.”

While it is important to consider constructive feedback and learn from experienced Estrela Mountain dog breeders, I also recognize that criticism can come from individuals with different perspectives and preferences. People who think they understand the breed, but in reality have owned dogs that did not fit the breed standard in personality, structure etc.

These self-appointed experts should not be guiding voices in the breeds future here. An Estrela Mountain Dog owner that has owned one or two Estrela Mountain Dogs, is not going to have the knowledge that we have gained over a lifetime of large guardian dog experience.

It is crucial to remember that not everyone will agree with our breeding decisions or vision. Breeding decisions involve a careful balance of genetics, temperament, and long-term goals. By staying true to our principles and following our experienced breed mentors, we can contribute to the betterment of the breed and maintain our commitment to responsible and ethical Estrela Mountain dog breeding.

Why are Responsible Dog Breeder’s Important?

Ethical breeders play a vital role in breed preservation. They are guardians of the breed’s heritage, ensuring its longevity and maintaining its unique characteristics for future generations to enjoy. Here are additional reasons why ethical Estrela Mountain dog breeders are essential:

  1. Preservation of breed standards: Ethical breeders diligently adhere to breed standards set by kennel clubs and breed organizations. By selectively breeding dogs that embody these standards, they help preserve the breed’s distinct appearance, temperament, and working abilities.
  2. Health and genetic diversity: Ethical breeders prioritize the health of their dogs. They conduct comprehensive health screenings, genetic testing, and responsible breeding practices to minimize the risk of hereditary diseases and promote genetic diversity within the breed. This helps maintain the overall well-being and longevity of the breed.
  3. Responsible placements: Ethical breeders carefully screen potential puppy owners to ensure that their puppies are placed in loving and suitable homes. They provide guidance and support throughout the dog’s life, emphasizing responsible ownership and providing valuable resources.
  4. Breed education and mentorship: Ethical breeders actively engage in educating others about the breed’s history, characteristics, and responsible breeding practices. They offer mentorship to novice breeders, sharing their knowledge and experiences to promote responsible breeding and ensure the preservation of the breed’s integrity.
  5. Advocacy and breed promotion: Ethical breeders are ambassadors for their breed. They participate in performance events, and community activities to showcase the breed’s abilities and raise awareness about responsible breeding practices. Their dedication helps maintain the breed’s visibility and fosters a positive perception among enthusiasts and the general public.

Ethical Dog Breeder’s are the Guardians of Estrela Mountain Dog Breed Preservation

As responsible Estrela Mountain Dog breeders, we understand the challenging path we must navigate.

Dog breeding faces significant challenges in light of the prevailing “Adopt, Don’t Shop” mentality. This movement emphasizes adopting dogs from shelters rather than purchasing from breeders. While adoption is a noble cause, it can overshadow the value and purpose of responsible dog breeding.

Ethical Estrela mountain dog breeders are the guardians of breed preservation. Their commitment to breed standards, health, responsible placements, education, and advocacy ensures the continuation of cherished breeds. Through their efforts, they contribute to the preservation of genetic diversity, the Estrela Mountain dog breed’s heritage, and the overall well-being of the dogs they love and cherish.

Breed Preservation: The “Adopt, Don’t Shop” Impact on Responsible Dog Breeders

The “Adopt, Don’t Shop” movement can have a negative impact on dog breed preservation, and as a responsible breeder, I have witnessed these challenges firsthand.

A mentor of mine told me, “If you don’t step up, someone else will. And they will likely not understand the breed, nor will they shepherd it like it deserves.”

The truth is: ethical dog breeder’s are not the problem to the current day ethical dog dilemma. They are the solution. Here’s why the “Adopt don’t shop” movement affects breed preservation:

Loss of genetic diversity

Responsible breeders play a vital role in preserving genetic diversity within breeds. The Estrela Mountain Dog is a rare breed, and it needs to be stewarded appropriately. By carefully selecting breeding candidates and considering health factors, we strive to reduce the occurrence of hereditary diseases and maintain the overall well-being of our dogs. With a decline in responsible breeding, there is a risk of losing valuable genetic diversity, which can lead to health issues and a limited gene pool in the future.

Neglect of breed-specific traits and purposes

Each dog breed possesses unique characteristics and abilities that make them suitable for specific tasks or lifestyles. Responsible breeders work diligently to preserve these traits. However, the “Adopt, Don’t Shop” mentality often overlooks the importance of maintaining breed-specific qualities. This neglect can result in the loss of valuable working abilities, temperament traits, or other characteristics that define a breed.

Lack of recognition for responsible Estrela Mountain dog breeders

The focus on adoption often overlooks the contributions of responsible breeders in maintaining breed standards and genetic diversity. The dedication we put into selecting healthy breeding pairs, conducting health tests, and ensuring proper care for our dogs is crucial for breed preservation. However, the movement’s narrative undermines the value of responsible breeding, and criminalizes all dog breeders.

Limited education on responsible breeding

The “Adopt, Don’t Shop” movement focuses primarily on adoption and rescue, often neglecting to educate the public about responsible breeding practices. Many people are unaware of the dedication, knowledge, and effort required to breed responsibly.

Without proper understanding and appreciation of responsible breeding, fewer individuals may choose to become breeders, further impacting breed preservation.

As a responsible breeder, I strive to navigate these challenges and continue my commitment to breed preservation. It is essential to strike a balance between adoption and responsible breeding to ensure the longevity, health, and diversity of our beloved dog breeds.

By recognizing and supporting responsible breeders, we can work together to preserve the unique qualities, heritage, and future of each breed.

Ethical Estrela Mountain Dog Breeder Summary

In conclusion, as a responsible Estrela Mountain dog breeder, I have needed to push through fear of judgement and commit to honoring the Estrela Mountain dog breed that I love. I’m committed to honoring the Estrela Mountain Dog breed, educating the public about this rare dog breed, and explaining why is is important to value responsible dog breeding.

I never compromise breed standards or ethics for fads, continue to educate myself, prioritize quality over quantity, conduct thorough health testing, and always prioritize the well-being of my breeding dogs.
